Google Cast is broken on some Vizio TVs: How to fix

Google is aware of an issue today with Cast (previously “Chromecast built-in”) not working “on certain VIZIO TV models from 2016-2020.”

A fix that you can manually install is rolling out “in the coming days.” It just involves downloading an update to your television.

Google provides the following instructions to fix Cast on these Vizio TVs:

  1. To verify if Cast is working on your TV, attempt to cast an app.
  2. If Cast does not work, press the menu button on your VIZIO remote and choose All Settings > Admin & Privacy > Check for Updates. A message will appear asking if you’re sure you’d like to check for updates, choose the Yes option.
    • For some older VIZIO models the steps may differ. If you do not see the above settings try System > Check for Updates
  3. Your TV will search for updates.
    • If your TV finds an update, please let it fully download before continuing.
    • If your TV does not find an update, don’t worry, it likely has the latest software.
  4. Once you’ve completed checking for updates, press the menu button on your VIZIO remote and choose All Settings > Admin & Privacy > Restart TV. A message will appear asking if you would like to restart your TV, choose Yes.
    • For some older VIZIO models the steps may differ. If you do not see the above settings try System > Reboot TV
    • Note: do not select “Restore to Factory” as this might override the fix.
  5. After your TV fully powers down, and restarts, you should be able to cast again.

This update will be available for “all affected TVs in early May, with no action required from you.” Google says “models after 2020 continue to work as intended,” while this problem follows the 2nd-gen Chromecast issue from last month.
