An iconic part of Nothing’s smartphones to date has been the Glyph Interface, otherwise known as the lights on the back of the device. Ahead of the Nothing Phone (3) debut, though, the company says that is has “killed the Glyph Interface.”
In a brief video posted to Twitter/X, Nothing says that “we killed the Glyph Interface,” showing the lights from Phone (1) in particular blinking and then eventually fading to black.
It’s a cryptic teaser, but at least one thing is clear.
Nothing Phone (3) won’t have the “Glyph Interface” as we know it today.
Does that mean the upcoming “true flagship” won’t have lights on the back? No. But it’s hard to say for certain what Nothing has in mind. Multiple users mention the idea of a “dot matrix” display on the back, in line with the design language of Nothing OS 3.0 and forward. Nothing even teased Phone (3)’s launch using this pattern. That’s not really based on anything, though, so it’s all just speculation for now.
The decision to do away with Glyph doesn’t really come as a surprise, though. While it was a flashy – literally – way to stand out from the crowd, Nothing struggled to find a real purpose for it outside of face-down notification alerts. Integration with Uber and Calendar was a neat idea, but still rested on the idea that users would put their device face down on a table instead of just looking at the actual notifications.
Did you ever use Glyph? Are you sad to see it go?
