Android Auto 14.8 is nearly ready to kill off Assistant as Maps tests a new shortcut

Google has launched its first Android Auto 14.8 update in beta which sets the stage of the death of Assistant and arrival of Gemini, while also apparently bringing a useful tweak to Google Maps.

Rolling out now in beta, Android Auto 14.8 brings a notable change in relation to the incoming debut of Gemini. Specifically, the “Assistant” section of settings has been changed to “Digital Assistant.” This change isn’t buried behind the scenes and is simply available when the latest update is installed.

Notably, though, nothing is changing functionally.

The new “Manage your digital assistant” section is still just a shortcut to Google Assistant settings, and the same goes for “Hey Google” detection. In the Messaging section, “Notifications with Assistant” still uses the existing branding.

This presumably sets the stage for Gemini’s arrival, which should start rolling out any time now. It’s not available with Android Auto 14.8, though.

Meanwhile, the folks over at AndroidSage noticed a new “Work” shortcut on Google Maps for Android Auto. The circular button appears next to the search bar with an easy way to navigate to your pre-set work destination. Presumably, a “Home” shortcut would also be available here.

This change is not attached to Android Auto 14.8, but we’re certainly hoping to see it roll out more widely in the future.

Android Auto 14.8 is currently rolling out in beta, while v14.7 is starting to roll out more widely in the stable channel.
