ChatGPT will start using Google’s cloud services, OpenAI confirms

Following a reported deal earlier this year, OpenAI has confirmed that it will start running ChatGPT on Google Cloud services.

For years now, OpenAI has relied on Microsoft’s Azure cloud services to run its various products, the most notable of which being ChatGPT. But things have progressed, OpenAI has been looking to lessen its dependence on Microsoft, and it seems that we’re about to see the first big move away from that.

It was first reported in June that OpenAI had struck a deal to use Google Cloud infrastructure, but details at the time were still a bit fuzzy. OpenAI has now confirmed (via CNBC) that it “expects” to start using Google’s cloud services to power ChatGPT.

OpenAI notes on its “Sub-processor list” that Google services will be used for ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu, and Team tiers, as well as OpenAI’s API. This is the same list of products and services as OpenAI’s other cloud providers, Microsoft, CoreWeave, and Oracle. Google’s cloud infrastructure will be used to service users in the US, UK, Japan, Norway, and the Netherlands.

End users will likely not know whether or not they’re using ChatGPT via Google Cloud services.
