Samsung seemingly sticks to the basics with ‘Galaxy Z TriFold’ branding

Although Samsung took the stage at Unpacked last week to debut an all-new trio of foldables, we’re still waiting for the company’s long-rumored tri-fold smartphone. Now, a new trademark registration might be giving away its eventual name before we even get a real tease.

The folks at GalaxyClub spotted a trademark registration in South Korea for a device called the “Galaxy Z TriFold” (h/t SamMobile). While there’s no specific evidence that this is specifically what Samsung plans to call its tri-foldable smartphone — GalaxyClub speculates it could also refer to an overall series of tri-fold devices — the timing does seem to lineup. Samsung was quick to confirm after last week’s event that a three-panel device is still on the way for this year, although it sounded like certain details, including its name, weren’t settled fact just yet.

Unfortunately, that trademark registration is all we have to go off of for the moment. To add some of my own speculation to the fire, I could see Samsung following the path it originally laid out with the first Galaxy Fold: delivering a more generalized name that describes the device before eventually giving the series its own identity.

Personally, I think “Galaxy Z TriFold” rolls off the tongue far better than the alternative rumored name, Galaxy G Fold. While that title could give Samsung’s tri-fold smartphones their own designated letter — rather than having to lean on the established Galaxy Z-series brand — it sounds cheap in a way that I can’t quite disconnect from what could be a $3,000 smartphone. Is it because Motorola uses the letter ‘G’ in the same way that Samsung and Google use the letter ‘A’? Perhaps.

Either way, Samsung’s next foldable is headed our way before the end of 2025 — though, whether it actually achieves a global launch is another question entirely.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 are now available for pre-order at Samsung’s website. In addition to saving up to $1,000 in trade-in value, you can score a storage upgrade for free on both devices, and $50 in additional credit for using 9to5Google‘s links.

Samsung’s new foldables, alongside the budget-ish Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, and the Galaxy Watch 8 and 8 Classic, start shipping on July 25th.
